Football Field Frenzy

Recently, a friend of mine got married.  She asked me to be a bridesmaid and then a couple months later told me about her plans for a grooms cake.  Her fiance/husband loves BYU sports, especially football.  She was having the woman who was doing the wedding cake make a BYU football helmet and football.  She thought that it would be really cool to have a football field to put them on and asked another bridesmaid and I to do it.  So, here it is.

We ended up using rice crispy treats to make the cake.  It's 12 inches by 18 inches, so it took alot of rice crispy treats.  Since he does love BYU, I dyed the rice crispy treats blue.  Then I covered them with buttercream to make it smooth.

It is covered in green fondant that I made.  I found some tiny cookie cutters to make all of the numbers and letters.  The yard lines are piped on.  The words Brigham Young and Cougars, I made by making some blue fondant and white fondant, cutting out the letters, and then stacking them on top of one another.

The center Y was made from a fondant oval, colored with edible marker and then a Y cut out and place on top.  Finally, I edged the cake with green buttercream frosting piped on with a grass tip.  The cake turned out great as did the wedding.  Congratulations to Courtney and Mike!

Tasty Sunday Treats

A couple weeks ago, I got bored after church and started baking.  The first thing I made was butter bread.  I got the recipe from a good friend back home and it is delicious!

As implied by its name, butter bread has lots of butter!  Each segment is dipped in butter before it's baked.  I love eating it with strawberry jam. . . :)

I then continued my baking spree by making some cake.  This is a chocolate fudge cake with a dulce de leche filling and then frosted with home made chocolate buttercream frosting.  It was very tasty!

I was in a hurry to get to a gathering of friends, so I didn't spend a ton of time trying to make it look great, but I think the taste made up for it. : )

Anna's Baby Shower Cake!

This weekend we had a baby shower for Baby Will! There were lots of family in attendance which made for a really good time!

The bottom layer is two 9 inch funfetti cakes with a chocolate filling and chocolate buttercream frosting. I added some big, light green fondant polka dots to go with the baby boy theme.

The top layer is an oval funfetti cake with vanilla buttercream frosting. The back is made from half of an egg pan. Covered with light blue fondant, buttercream border, and small, light green polka dots to tie in with the polka dot theme on the rest of the cake. Needless to say we had some good times and delicious cake!

Autumn Leaves Cake

To celebrate the fact that Fall (winter) has finally arrived in Utah, I made this cake over the long weekend. I wanted something that reminded me of Fall without being too much on the Halloween side of Fall. It is a fudge chocolate cake, vanilla filled, and frosted in chocolate.
This was my first time working with the mini-pumpkins, and for the trials I did, I think they came out pretty well, and bring across the Fall theme very well.

The leaves were made out of royal icing, and I tried to get some really great colors that remind me of Fall and the leaves falling from the trees.

The sides of the cake were frosted in a basket weave style. It really made it look like a basket full of pumpkins.

Camoflauge Hunter Cake

This cake was made as a birthday present for my brother-in-law whose birthday happens to land on the fourth of July. He loves hunting and such, so that is what inspired the camoflauge design.
The day of we went to Bear World and found these figurines that we thought would be great to finish off the cake.
This is a funfetti cake filled with chocolate buttercream and decorated with vanilla and chocolate buttercream frosting!

Christmas Tree Cake

For my final in my cake decorating class, since we were nearing Christmas time, my brother gave me the suggestion of doing a 3 dimensional Christmas tree and this is my final product.

We worked on these finals for a couple weeks, with Thanksgiving break breaking up our time, so I chose to work with rice crispy cakes. It is a four layer cake, one for the trunk and the other three make up the rest of the tree.
In this cake I used all the different mediums that we worked with during our class. The trunk, border of the tree skirt, garlands, and texture on the angel's dress were buttercream. Most of the angel and the tree skirt were made from fondant. All of the needles, bows, snoflakes, and the angel's wings were made from royal icing.
And here is the final product. I really like how it turned out overall. There was some great texture in the needles of the tree and the decorations turned out pretty well also.
